PRESIDENT MARGARET’S REPORT

By the time you receive this edition of the Mustard Tree we will be into the third month of this year. How quickly the time goes by so we must make sure we make the most of every day. How hot it was early in the year. I trust the constant high temperatures did not sap your energy too much. Personally I found it quite exhausting!! There are certainly advantages to be had in living on the south coast!

No doubt your branch is well into its programme and I am hoping that, by following our theme, you will have much to discover and celebrate. I was pleased to receive copies of the year’s programme that your branch will be following. I hope also that you will sing along joyfully with the words of our theme song, Give me oil in my lamp. I was encouraged to see that Collie Branch has incorporated our theme into their meeting days and that they will be endeavouring to discover their God-given gifts.

I have had contact from several branches and have made arrangements to travel to Wagin in April to meet up with members from Katanning and Williams, to Albany in June where I will renew friendships and perhaps meet members from nearby Denmark, and to Boyanup in July as the branch celebrates its 85th birthday. Mandurah has also invited me to present a long-service award to one of their members so I look forward to making a return visit to that branch and I will also be journeying to Boddington to present another long-service award.

Lady Day will be celebrated this month with the Eucharist in St Boniface Cathedral. Did you know that the Cathedral is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its consecration this year, another milestone to celebrate! Our Lady Day luncheon will once again take place at the Parade Hotel by the water; maybe some dolphins will come and celebrate with us. The hotel is under new management and the lunch itself will come to you in a different format. I would encourage you to give us any feedback (excuse the pun!) on the new luncheon arrangements. The speaker on the day will be Rev‘d Dr Desiree Snyman, the priest in charge of the Dunsborough Parish.

I will be journeying to Melbourne in May to take part in the Australian Council meeting which will be held at Palotti College in Millgrove. I am certain that I will be able to bring back lots of new ideas for you and your branches. Doreen Hall will arrive several days before me as she will be attending the Australian Executive Meeting in her role as the Australian Social Responsibilities coordinator. It is interesting to note that my sister from the Diocese of Perth will also be attending. No doubt that will lead to lots of chatter on the plane trip!!

As our theme song states, we ask that God will give us the energy to enable us to keep on keeping on!!

Give me oil in my lamp, keep me burning
Give me oil in my lamp, I pray
Give me oil in my lamp, keep me burning
Keep me burning ‘til the break of day

Love and blessings
Margaret

MU TARTAN

While reading the Newsletter received from Lee Thorn in Melbourne I noticed they were promoting MU scarves. At the time Bussleton was getting colder each day and several members showed interest in purchasing an MU scarf. I contacted Lee and she kindly forwarded to me the necessary information concerning the scarves. One option was to contact the MU shop in Melbourne, another was to go direct to the web site in the UK, www.muscotland.org.uk/tartan this proved to be a most rewarding exercise as there was a photo of Rosalind Jones, designer of the Mothers Union Tartan together with a description of the tartan, which follows:

"The Mothers Union Tartan is characterised by the blue and yellow colours of the Mothers Union. A blue cross symbolises the unifying Christian faith that is the spiritual heart of the Mothers Union. Outside the cross are pale and dark green symbolising vegetation zones of different global environments of the world-wide members of the Mothers Union. Beyond the greens, brown and black bands represent the ethnicity of the different members. On the outside of the sett the blue and yellow colours of the Mothers Union encompass all the colours within it, symbolising the fellowship that holds all members to be equal and the bond of friendship and common beliefs that unite them."

To place an order for a scarf, contact Suzanne Seager, Office Manager, MU shop, mumelb@tpg.com.au the scarves are $25.00.

NEWS FROM BUSSELTON

In January, our committee met at President Eleanor’s home to plan the year and make arrangements for others to step up in the absence of Eleanor (overseas May/June/early July), Win (overseas for ever it seems!!!) and Mary on a cycle trip (April), We held our first meeting for the year on 16th February with a very good attendance together with 2 of our Friends visiting for the afternoon. Penny Pitman (friend of MU) gave a presentation on the new programme of Mainly Music which has now had “the go ahead” to happen at Saint Mary’s. We are all very enthusiastic about Mainly Music which is designed for mothers and small children (babies to kindergarten). Penny and our president will be the leaders of the music and dance and we are delighted to say most other positions, admin, hospitality, and prayer are being handled by friends of MU. We plan to establish a roster to encourage other members and also parishioners to take part – even if it is only once a month – that will be wonderful. Mainly Music is a franchise and requires registration and fees to be paid to purchase “the package”. We will be having 4 training sessions of an hour duration over the coming weeks, and the big day – the first day of Mainly Music will be on Thursday 26 April. The programme is designed to meet and greet, the family pays an entry fee of $5.00 regardless of how many children come with the mother. The children get a bright sticker to put on their shirt, dress or whatever, they then go and sit down on the cushions ready to start at 10.15am promptly. The programme runs for exactly half an hour, non stop, no interruptions, consisting of singing with actions, dancing, using hand held bits and pieces, then winding down, waving and singing goodbye, then off to morning tea. The morning tea is provided for the children at little tables, by MU and other ladies of the parish. Also morning tea for the mothers (and fathers and grandparents if it happens to be). During this time the children will mingle and play with various toys etc and the mothers will get to know each other (and spread the word). Here at Saint Mary’s Busselton we are very excited about this programme and can’t wait to get started, we can’t wait to Discover all those mums and bubs out there and Celebrate with them watch this space!!
